Steven Levitt

Steven Levitt Steven was born in Singapore, and grew up in Buckinghamshire. He was one of the first 8 students to be selected by audition to study at the Aylesbury Music Centre, in 1966 when he was 10. The centre now has an international reputation. He studied Piano, Cello and composition with a highly regarded teachers, and was principal cellist in all of the orchestras at the centre during his time there. He has toured France, Germany and Denmark with the Aylesbury Youth Orchestra, and was also a member of the Buckinghamshire County Youth Orchestra for 8 years.

He has been teaching in the Cambridge area since moving here in 1980. He taught at the Young Arbury Music Makers when it began in 1980 and from 1983 to1990 was its musical director. In 1989, Steven and Lynette moved to Milton, just north of Cambridge, when they married. The name Rowans Music was adopted, as they lived in The Rowans at that time. From 1990-1995 Steven founded and ran the Rowans School of Music Saturday Centre. He was Musical Director of the Fulbourn Dance and Theatre School (now Splitz Theatre Artz) for 3 years from 2004.

His private practice has grown over the years and now covers, at home in Milton, Barton, Caldecote, Cambourne, Cambridge, Chesterton, Cottenham, Coton, Dry Drayton, Fen Ditton, Foxton, Girton, Hardwick, Harston, Haslingfield, Hauxton, Histon & Impington, Horningsea, Kings Hedges, Landbeach, Orchard Park, Swavesey, Trumpington, Waterbeach, Wilburton and Willingham.

Steven has been involved in church music for centuries, having been organist and choirmaster at St Peter's, Duxford in the 1980s where John Rutter's wife and daughter were members of his choir. During the 1990s he was organist and choirmaster at St Andrew's, Isleham (where he started an annual Taizé style service which continues to this day), and was choir director and one of the organists at St Andrew's, Histon during the early 2000s, at the invitation of the current archdeacon of Huntingdon and Wisbech, the Ven Hugh McCurdy who was the vicar at that time. He has most recently been choir director and one of the organists at St George's, Chesterton.

He has been involved with the Music and Worship Foundation (mwf) since 1992, working with the directors of the organisation and was also the Cambridgeshire representative from 1994 until 2006 when the mwf changed it's structure of working. He was Designer of the mwf's National Newsletter, "Baseline" from 2008 to 2011 when the mwf handed over to He has been a member of the National Network of Pastoral Musicians (NNPM) since 1996.
